DIY Paper Lanterns: 5 Designs for Any Event
Why Paper Lanterns?
Paper lanterns are inexpensive, customizable, and create instant atmosphere. They work for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, and holiday celebrations alike.
Design 1: Classic Accordion Lantern
Fold a large sheet of tissue paper accordion-style (1-inch folds). Tie the center with string, then fan out the folds into a sphere. Hang from ceiling or tree branches in clusters of 3-5.
Design 2: Geometric Cutout Lantern
- Cut cardstock into a rectangular panel (12x8 inches)
- Use a craft knife to cut geometric patterns
- Roll into a cylinder and glue the seam
- Insert an LED tea light for safe illumination
Design 3: Tassel Bottom Lantern
Add paper tassels to the bottom of a basic lantern for movement and texture. Cut strips of tissue paper 6 inches long, fold in half, and attach with glue dots.
Color Coordination
Match lantern colors to your event palette. Ombré arrangements (dark to light, hung at varying heights) create sophisticated visual depth without complex construction.
