DIY Paper Lanterns: 3 Styles for Any Party
Why Paper Lanterns Work
Paper lanterns create instant ambiance at minimal cost. They work for birthdays, weddings, holiday gatherings, and everything in between. These three styles cover every aesthetic from minimalist to ornate.
Style 1: Classic Round Lantern
The traditional Chinese-inspired design adapted for modern parties.
Materials
- Colored cardstock (12x18 inches)
- Scissors and ruler
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- LED tea light (battery-operated)
- String or fishing line for hanging
Steps
Cut the cardstock into a rectangle. Fold in half lengthwise. Make parallel cuts every half inch from the fold, stopping 1 inch from the open edge. Unfold, roll into a cylinder, and glue the short edges together. The cuts bow outward, creating the lantern shape. Place an LED tea light inside.
Style 2: Geometric Honeycomb
Modern, angular lanterns that catch light beautifully.
Materials
- 6 identical paper circles (8-inch diameter)
- Hot glue gun
- Wire frame or cardboard ring
Fold each circle in half. Glue the folded edges together in a star pattern, creating a 3D honeycomb effect when opened. Suspend from the wire frame.
Style 3: Tassel Lantern
Bohemian-inspired with flowing paper tassels.
Materials
- Tissue paper in 3 complementary colors
- Wire hoop (embroidery hoop works)
- Scissors
Cut tissue paper into 1-inch strips, 12 inches long. Fold each strip over the wire hoop and twist to create a tassel. Cover the entire hoop with tassels in alternating colors for a full, textured look.
Hanging and Display
Use fishing line for an invisible suspension effect. Vary heights for visual interest—hang some at 7 feet and others at 5 feet. Cluster in groups of 3 or 5 for the most impactful display.
