Diwali Sweets: 5 Homemade Recipes

Sweet Celebrations at Home

Diwali is incomplete without mithai. Homemade sweets carry warmth that guests immediately notice. These five recipes range from simple to intermediate.

1. Gulab Jamun

Milk-solid dumplings soaked in rose-cardamom syrup. Use milk powder with heavy cream for foolproof dough. Fry at 300°F, soak in warm sugar syrup 2+ hours.

2. Kaju Barfi

Cashew fudge: cashews, sugar, ghee. Grind to powder, cook with sugar syrup until it leaves pan sides, spread and cut into diamonds. Silver leaf (varak) for finish.

3. Besan Ladoo

Roast chickpea flour in ghee 15-20 minutes until fragrant. Cool, mix with powdered sugar and cardamom, roll into balls while warm.

4. Coconut Barfi

Fresh coconut with condensed milk and sugar until thick, set in greased tray. Easiest recipe — under 30 minutes. Add saffron for color.

5. Rava Ladoo

Semolina roasted in ghee, mixed with sugar, milk, nuts, shaped into balls. Pleasantly granular texture. Keeps one week airtight.

Packaging for Gifts

Decorative boxes with parchment paper lining. Separate layers with cupcake liners. Handwritten labels add the personal touch.
